Meet the Cast of Netflix’s ‘One Piece‘ Live-Action Series – Netflix has released a real-action adaptation of “One Piece,” a popular manga series and one of Japan’s best-selling stories. This legendary pirate adventure is like no other, according to the platform.
The show stars Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy and follows the journey of a young man seeking freedom. He leaves his village to find a legendary treasure known as ONE PIECE, which would make him the pirate king. Godoy plays Monkey D. Luffy, a well-known character in manga and Japanese animation for being idealistic and cheerful.
The original work, created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, has over 1,000 manga chapters and is still ongoing. Its animated version has also reached over 1,000 episodes. Netflix aims to recreate this success with an eight-episode series that covers the story of the manga’s first 100 chapters. Some characters introduced in the early episodes become important figures hundreds of chapters later.
In the Netflix series, Luffy becomes a pirate and forms a crew called the Straw Hats, including swordsman Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), thief and navigator Nami (Emily Rudd), sniper Usopp (Jacob Romero), and cook Sanji (Taz Skylar). They are pursued by the Marine, the ocean’s top authority with its own interests, as well as ruthless pirates.
The eight-episode series has a lively tone, sometimes resembling a kids’ show, and other times it feels like a Pirates of the Caribbean movie directed by David Lynch and produced under the influence of drugs, as noted by CNN’s Brian Lowry.
A key aspect of the original work is the sense of camaraderie and friendship among the characters, which Netflix aims to capture in its adaptation. Here are the characters from the Netflix series.
Who are the protagonists of Netflix’s “One Piece”?
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy: Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy portrays Luffy, the cheerful protagonist who ate a devil fruit in his childhood, giving him the power to stretch like rubber but preventing him from swimming. The original manga’s creator, Eiichiro Oda, recognized Iñaki Godoy as the perfect fit for Luffy.
- Emily Rudd as Nami: Nami is the crew’s navigator and the first female character to join Luffy’s adventures. Netflix describes her as “the cool and calm cat thief of the group.”
- Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro: Japanese actor Mackenyu idolized the character of Roronoa Zoro, a green-haired swordsman who wields three swords in combat. One in each hand and one in his mouth.
- Jacob Romero as Usopp: Usopp adds humor to the story. Jacob Romero brings to life a character who is kind-hearted but often tells tall tales. He dreams of becoming a great sea warrior like his father and often carries a slingshot, self-proclaiming himself as a “sniper.”
